Abstract

Background. At the present time, qualitative research methods, capable of being an efficient instrument of sociological research, are becoming more and more wide-spread. However, one should clearly understand the possibilities and limits of appli-cation of such methods. The aim of the research is to reveal capabilities of the trian-gulation method in ensuring validity of empirical study results.
Materials and methods. The research tasks were implemented through the analysis of scientific propositions by domestic and foreign sociologists. Theoretically the research was based on fundamental works of sociologists, reflecting conceptual ideas of the theory and practice of quantitative and qualitative methods. When sol¬ving the set objective the authora used general scientific research methods: analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction.
Results and conclusions. On the basis of the theoretical analysis, the authors have revealed the role of methodological triangulation in improving validity of em-pirical study results. The triangulation method, presupposing a combination of qualititave and quantitative methods, expands possibilities of information obtainment and ensures validity and reliability of the results obtained.
